Clara Palli’s work moves between philosophy, illusion, surrealism, mysticism, and art — probing the structures of meaning, perception, and human experience.

Born in 1978, Spain
Lives and works in The Hague.

Clara Pallí Monguilod holds a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts and a Master Artistic Research from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Since 2004, alongside a career as a visual artist, she has been devoted to co- curating and co-directing Art Space 1646 in The Hague (www.1646.nl).

Artistic Practice

As with theories in psychology that understand the self as constituted of different ‘personas’, my practice is metaphorically shaped by a conversation between five different characters.

The first one is the philosopher. She is preoccupied with the finite quality of things and thinking about how we can live more fully, questioning the structures that dictate how things ‘should’ be.

The second one is the illusionist. Using disorienting tricks, she reveals obscure connections between events from the past, present and future. She replicates the opaque ways in which larger narratives are constructed, while being moved by a desire to understand.

The third character is the surrealist. She is fascinated by the potential of the strange and unknown as a way to come to new meaning and to question the norm.

The fourth one is the mystic. She looks for the significance of things, embracing an experience of mystery and spirituality, while grounded in an earthly realm.

And finally, the artist, who explores what role art can play in all the above mentioned wonderings.

Curatorial Practice

Alongside a career as a visual artist, since 2004 I have been devoted to co-curating and co-directing Art Space 1646 in The Hague (www.1646.nl).

At 1646, and from my background as an artist, I supported over two hundred local and international artists produce new work. This has involved thinking together of how to materialise their ideas, encouraging and safeguarding the space for them to experiment and take risks, and creating the context in which an in-depth perspective of their practice can be shared with an audience.

With a focus on solo-projects, 1646 offers a public program containing a generous overview of exhibitions, artist talks, events, publications, dialogues and a residency program. Valuing the circulation of perspectives, 1646 has initiated countless collaborations with international partners and has also curated projects abroad.

The program at 1646 resonates with the artistic interests of its founders, revolving around artistic strategies such as fictioning, complicating and humour. It understands fiction as an essential instrument to help imagine the world differently. It embraces and celebrates complexity, contradiction and paradox as inherent qualities of human existence, and uses play and humour as tools needed to maintain an open attitude when confronted with delicate subjects.
